2013 week-44 South Sound chum Apple Cove Point purse-seine test fishery results (10/31/2013)

Today was the fourth week of test fishing for South Puget Sound chum at Apple Cove Point near Kingston.

We caught a total of 2,327 chum in six purse seine sets:

Set 1 – 1,251 chum (and 2 coho and 1 immature Chinook)

Set 2- 211 chum (and 1 coho)

Set 3 – 39 chum

Set 4 – 16 chum

Set 5- 55 chum (and 1 coho and 1 immature Chinook)

Set 6- 755 chum (and 1 coho)

The age distribution will be posted when it becomes available.

Our sample was 55% females.

2013 week-43 South Sound chum Apple Cove Point purse-seine test fishery results (10/23/2013)

October 24th, 2013

Today was the third week of test fishing for South Puget Sound chum at Apple Cove Point near Kingston. Despite severe fog and less than ideal tides, catches improved significantly over the past two weeks.

We caught a total of 3,456 chum in five purse seine sets:

Set 1 – 214 chum (and 4 coho)

Set 2- 565 chum (and 12 coho and 4 immature Chinook)

Set 3 – 528 chum (and 12 coho and 5 immature Chinook)

Set 4 – 425 chum (and 15 coho and 4 immature Chinook)

Set 5- 1,724 chum (and 8 coho and 2 immature Chinook)

The age distribution of our 200 fish sample was 20% age-3s, 71% age-4s, 8% age-5s and 1% age-6s.

Our sample was 56% females.

Quick recap of weeks 41 and 42:

During the week-41 South Sound chum test fishery, a total of 464 chum were caught in six sets. The catch was 34% females. And age breakdown was 4.5% age-3s, 86.5% age-4s, 8.5% age-5s and 0.5% age-6s.

During the week-42 South Sound chum test fishery, a total of 494 chum were caught in six sets. The catch was 46% females. And age breakdown was 10.0% age-3s, 83.6% age-4s, and 6.4% age-5s.

 

2012 week-45 South Sound chum Apple Cove Point purse-seine test fishery results (11/7/2012)

November 7th, 2012

Today was the fifth week of test fishing for South Puget Sound chum at Apple Cove Point near Kingston. Catches were poor.

We caught a total of 121 chum in six purse seine sets:

Set 1 – 5 chum (and 2 coho and 3 immature Chinook)

Set 2- 1 chum (and 1 immature Chinook)

Set 3 – 3 chum

Set 4 – 30 chum (and 1 coho and 1 immature Chinook)

Set 5- 30 chum (and 2 coho and 1 immature Chinook)

Set 6 – 3 chum

This week’s catch was 63% females.

2012 week-44 South Sound chum Apple Cove Point purse-seine test fishery results (10/30/2012)

October 30th, 2012

Today was the fourth week of test fishing for South Puget Sound chum at Apple Cove Point near Kingston. Catches were more consistent than last week.

We caught a total of 1,259 chum in six purse seine sets:

Set 1 – 273 chum (and 2 coho)

Set 2- 86 chum (and 1 coho)

Set 3 – 249 chum (and 6 coho and 2 Chinook)

Set 4 – 117 chum (and 4 coho)

Set 5- 240 chum (and 4 coho)

Set 6 – 294 chum (1 coho)

This week’s sample (n=240) was 53% females, closer to to normal than last week’s highly skewed sex ratio.

2012 week-43 South Sound chum Apple Cove Point purse-seine test fishery results (10/24/2012)

October 24th, 2012

Today was the third week of test fishing for South Puget Sound chum at Apple Cove Point near Kingston. Catches were “spotty” with three decent sets and three poor sets.

We caught a total of 1,005 chum in six purse seine sets:

Set 1 – 18 chum (and 2 immature Chinook)

Set 2- 251 chum (and 6 coho)

Set 3 – 151 chum (and 4 coho and 1 immature Chinook)

Set 4 – 29 chum (and 3 coho and 1 immature Chinook)

Set 5- 556 chum (and 12 coho)

Set 6 – no chum (1 coho)

The age breakdown was 57% age-3, 33% age-4, and 10% age-5.

The sample (n=181) was 68% females, which is higher than normal for week 43.

2012 week-42 South Sound chum Apple Cove Point purse-seine test fishery results (10/17/2012)

October 18th, 2012

Yesterday was the second week of test fishing for South Puget Sound chum at Apple Cove Point near Kingston. Catches were again very large including the third-largest single set in the 31-year test fishery data series.

We caught a total of 5,245 chum in five purse seine sets:

Set 1 – 742 chum (and 35 coho)

Set 2- 387 chum (and 9 coho and 2 immature Chinook)

Set 3 – 590 chum (and 22 coho and 2 immature Chinook)

Set 4 – 3,143 chum (and 15 coho and 3 immature Chinook)

Set 5- 318 chum (and 9 coho and 2 immature Chinook)

The age breakdown was 40% age-3, 53% age-4, and 7% age-5.

The sample was 42% females.

2012 week-41 South Sound chum Apple Cove Point purse-seine test fishery results (10/10/2012)

October 10th, 2012

Today was the first day of test fishing for South Puget Sound chum at Apple Cove Point near Kingston. Catches were higher than expected, considering the 2012 preseason forecast for South Sound chum of just 200,665.

We caught a total of 3,112 chum in six purse seine sets:

Set 1 – 436 chum (and 13 coho)

Set 2- 480 chum (and 11 coho and 2 immature Chinook)

Set 3 – 544 chum (and 16 coho and 2 immature Chinook)

Set 4 – 431 chum (and 8 coho and 1 immature Chinook)

Set 5- 1,217 chum (and 27 coho and 1 immature Chinook)

Set 6 – 3 chum

The age breakdown was 31.2% age-3, 51.8% age-4, and 17.1% age-5.

The sample was 31% females.

The next test fishery is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 17.

 

 

2011 week-46 South Sound chum Apple Cove Point purse-seine test fishery results (11/8/2011)

November 8th, 2011

Test fishing for South Sound chum at Apple Cove Point concluded today with moderate success.

Our first three sets, fished on the morning ebb tide produced small catches, but the three afternoon sets, fished on the flood tide, provided somewhat better catches, by week-46 standards.

We caught a total of 620 chum (and 1 coho) in six sets. The breakdown by set was:

Set 1      10 chum

Set 2      3 chum

Set 3      20 chum

Set 4      93 chum

Set 5      272 chum

Set 6      222 chum (plus 1 coho)

2011 week-45 South Sound chum Apple Cove Point purse-seine test fishery results (11/2/2011)

November 2nd, 2011

Week-45 test fishing at Apple Cove point was the best week yet this season.

The tides were favorable, flooding in the morning and ebbing in the afternoon.

We caught a total of 1,516 chum (and 9 coho) in six sets. The breakdown by set was:

Set 1      54 chum

Set 2      96 chum

Set 3      803 chum (plus 1 coho)

Set 4      256 chum (plus 1 coho)

Set 5      122 chum (plus 6 coho)

Set 6      185 chum (plus 1 coho)

Our chum sample was 47% female. The age-breakdown was 6% age-3, 89.5% age-4, and 4.5% age-5.

The current 2011 in-season South Sound chum run size was updated to 456,000 last week.

2011 week-44 South Sound chum Apple Cove Point purse-seine test fishery results (10/27/2011)

October 27th, 2011

Test fishing at Apple Cove Point produced better results this week.

The tides were not ideal, but not considered to be too unfavorable. It was ebbing in the morning and flooding in the afternoon.

We caught a total of 974 chum (along with 9 coho and 4 Chinook) in six sets. The breakdown by set was:

Set 1      99 chum (plus 1 coho)

Set 2      85 chum (plus 1 coho)

Set 3      265 chum (plus 2 coho)

Set 4      125 chum (plus 1 coho and 3 Chinook)

Set 5      260 chum (plus 2 coho)

Set 6      140 chum (plus 2 coho and 1 Chinook)

Our chum sample was exactly 50% female. The age-breakdown will be posted here once it becomes available.

The 2011 pre-season forecast total for South/Central Sound chum was around 487,500 (430,000 wild + 57,500 hatchery).
